Chapter 645 - 227 Sincerity is a Killer Move, but Going Alone is a Dead End_2
Li Yuan listened intently as Xia Zhijin recounted their relationship, his cheeks flushing slightly with a mix of guilt and shame. This treasure of a girl... her entire world revolves around me, yet I’m not solely dedicated to her.
As Chu Yanyan listened to the story, a curious expression formed in her beautiful eyes. She glanced at Li Yuan, who stood by with a constant smile, carrying their things. His towering height, well-defined physique, handsome and cool features, and his generous spending... I’d give him a solid 90 points. She couldn’t help but admire her cousin’s good taste. Even the so-called "high-quality guys" I’ve met at my own male-heavy university couldn’t compare to him.
"Tsk tsk, Zhijin, Li Yuan, you two are quite the romantics!" Chu Yanyan turned to Li Yuan and teased, "But Li Yuan, you’re just a freshman. Where did you learn all these tricks to win Zhijin over?"
Li Yuan gave an awkward smile. What tricks? This is just child’s play.
"Yanyan, it wasn’t trickery," he said earnestly. "It was my sincerity that moved Zhijin’s heart. Sincerity is the ultimate weapon in love!"
Of course, I left out the second half of that thought. That "ultimate weapon," combined with my other advantages, is an unbeatable hand. On its own, however, it’s a one-way ticket to doom. Luckily, my "sincerity" can be played along with my other cards.
"Sincerity is the ultimate weapon in love?" Chu Yanyan murmured to herself, her eyes brightening. She couldn’t help but study Li Yuan more deeply, her heart stirring.
"Li Yuan, you’re young, but your insight is quite profound," Chu Yanyan remarked with emotion. She then took Xia Zhijin’s hand and pointed to an adjacent building. "There are many sights worth seeing at our university. This building here is our school’s antique-style library. It’s said to have decades of history. And over there is the clock tower..."
"This is the sports field. The environment is pretty good, right? How does it compare to your school?"
"And here’s the gym. It has basketball courts, badminton courts, and table tennis tables. It’s always so crowded that you can never get a spot, so I hardly ever go..."
The trio, one young man and two young women, wandered along the lush green paths of Modu University of Technology, soaking in the charming scenery of the campus. Li Yuan was all too familiar with the place. There was no sense of novelty for him, only the memories imprinted on his mind.
Suddenly, a phone rang.
Li Yuan and Xia Zhijin both turned their gazes to Chu Yanyan.
Xia Zhijin reminded her with a smile, "Yanyan, your phone is ringing."
"Oh, let me see who it is." Chu Yanyan took a very ordinary Nokia phone from her purse. Her smiling expression vanished the moment she saw the caller ID. She didn’t answer, simply hanging up.
She then feigned an easy smile and said, "It’s nothing, just an unknown number. Probably a telemarketer."
Li Yuan’s observational skills had been greatly enhanced after his rebirth, and he had been subtly watching Chu Yanyan. He caught the fleeting change in her expression when she saw the phone number. She obviously recognizes the number but claims it’s a stranger. There’s definitely something strange about this...
Though suspicious, Li Yuan didn’t ask about it, as that would be inappropriate.
However, just as Chu Yanyan hung up, her phone rang again.
Looking slightly embarrassed, Chu Yanyan pulled out her phone. Her expression grew even more strained when she saw it was the same number. Though she quickly forced her usual sweet smile back onto her face, the momentary slip did not escape Li Yuan’s notice.
Li Yuan remained outwardly calm, but his mind was flooded with the bloody scene from his past life.
If I didn’t know her, it would be best to stay out of it. But it seems highly likely that the campus belle who committed suicide is Xia Zhijin’s cousin. This cousin is so close to Zhijin, and it’s because of her that I met this precious girl in the first place. For both logical and emotional reasons, I can’t just stand by and watch her die. I can’t even begin to imagine how Xia Zhijin, a girl from such a pitiful background, must have felt in my past life when she learned that her closest relative had also jumped to her death... If it were me, I probably would have broken down completely. Just like when my own elder cousin committed suicide over love, I was devastated for a long time, and my uncle’s family was grief-stricken, weeping every day...
Not long after Chu Yanyan hung up, the phone rang again, only for her to silence it once more.
By now, the perceptive Xia Zhijin also noticed something was wrong. "Yanyan, whose call is that?" she asked, puzzled. "Why aren’t you answering? What if it’s something important?"
Chu Yanyan forced herself to look composed and shook her head. "It’s nothing, just a strange number. Don’t worry about it. Let’s keep looking around. It’s not often you and Li Yuan get to visit."
Xia Zhijin felt that something was amiss but couldn’t quite put her finger on it.
Just then, Li Yuan suddenly chuckled and joked, "Zhijin, maybe it’s one of Yanyan’s admirers calling, and she’s too embarrassed to answer in front of us."
Xia Zhijin’s eyes lit up. What Li Yuan suggested is very likely. Her bright eyes twinkled as she turned to her cousin and stifled a giggle.
"Yanyan, is it really one of your admirers?"
Chu Yanyan’s heart skipped a beat. She knew perfectly well who was calling, and it was precisely for that reason she felt so helpless. As Xia Zhijin’s cousin, while she couldn’t compare to Zhijin’s otherworldly beauty, she was still a solid nine out of ten. At the male-dominated Modu University of Technology, she was exceptionally popular and had been hailed as the campus belle. She had many admirers, but none of them were truly exceptional.
